2. The Colonial United States Continental Army

Earlier tonight, we gave the servers the 1.2 Linux release. Now I am proud to give you all The Battle Grounds 1.2 windows release.

We have worked hard for 3 months on this patch and I hope you enjoy it a lot. The exploiting problems of 1.1 are gone.

The next major release will contain all new weapons and uniform selections. It is an exciting time. The game-files page is now up and mirrors are being added to it as they arrive,"

After many months of development, the Natural Selection 2.0 release date has finally been determined: TSA Thursday - July 31st, 2003!

NS 2.0 is a significant step forward in the process of merging first person shooters with real-time strategy into a combination of truly atmospheric and social gaming. With huge improvements over the previous gameplay of 1.04, plus plenty of all new features, levels, animations, sounds, and artwork, Natural Selection 2.0 stands ready to turn online gaming back on its ear just like our first release last October. Nearly every aspect of the game has been revisited and reworked from feedback from hundreds of the top NS veterans and thousands of games played on public and private servers around the globe.

Some of our new features include:

- Highly improved server CPU performance that uses much lower resources than
previous versions, for larger games or more game servers per CPU.
- Simplified resource model and fundamental game re-balancing for faster,
more varied and more intense gameplay.

- New alien upgrades allow aliens to detect human pheromones, be silenced
while attacking, and build structures that cloak all nearby players and structures. New abilities allow the Onos to stun enemies with Stomp and Devour them whole.

- New visuals mean Skulks rotate to align to walls when running along them, sentries puff smoke when firing, and alien structures explode in a burst of slime when destroyed. Many new sounds lend a slicker sci-fi feel.

- Four new maps and tweaked and balanced existing maps for all new gameplay. Take a ride on a lost colony ship and get a view into space, or take the battle to the rock tunnels of a deserted and "re-colonized" mine shaft.

- New commander mode makes commanding easier then ever. Hotgroups, squad support, a "select all" button, the ability to locate marines in need of orders, ammo or health packs, and re-bindable hotkey support.

- Full support for competitive play through tournament mode, handicapping, VALVe's Anti-Cheat support (VAC) and large-scale match broadcasting through Half-life TV (HLTV). First-person view is now supported while playing or spectating.

This list just scratches at the surface of NS 2.0; radical changes combined with the best parts of our original play makes this release an all new experience even for experts. We think that this Natural Selection comes much closer to realizing the original design vision, and you will reap the benefits of all this hard work. Stop by http://www.natural-selection.org/ for more info on and news. We have even included some brand new custom artwork by our renowned lead artist, Cory Strader to get everyone in the mood! Check them out here ThumbnailThumbnail. In the next few weeks we will begin to bombard your site with exclusive images, movies, info, and much more. You can also check our official news outlet at http://www.readyroom.org for daily updates on NS and the community, or visit our forums at http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/.

Natural Selection is a 100% free downloadable mod for Half-Life, Counterstrike retail, and DOD retail players. With over 1,000,000 downloads, it is one of the most popular Half-Life online experiences in the world. If you want thrilling sci-fi with truly original design and gameplay, NS is waiting for you.

WAIKIKAMUKAU--July 2, 2003--The SvenCo-op Team announced today that Sven
Co-op for Half-Life 2, sequel to the popular Half-Life co-operative
modification, is currently in late planning stages. Valve Software,
creators of Half-Life and its upcoming sequel, have recently expressed
interest in helping the SvenCo-op team following the release of Half-Life 2.

“The team and I are currently working to finish the project design so we
can immediately push forward once we get our hands on the SDK“ said Sven
Viking, SC Team Leader. “We really feel that with Half-Life 2, we will be
able to take co-operative gameplay to the next level.”

Sven Co-op, the original Half-Life co-operative mod, is currently the most
popular co-operative modification in the world, with over 100,000 recorded
downloads of the v2.0F installer.

Sven Co-op for Half-Life 2 will benefit not only from Half-Life 2’s highly
advanced engine, greater volume of content and extensive feature set, but
also from new and innovative gameplay resulting from four years of
experience with the genre. Among the new features will be the ability for
mapmakers to create their own game modes, and features to make gameplay
more rewarding.

Work on Sven Co-op for Half-Life 2 will not impact the development of Sven
Co-op 3.0 or the They Hunger Co-op conversion. Watch www.svencoop.com for
news of these projects in the near future.

About the SvenCo-op Team:

The SC Team has extensive and varied experience developing computer mods --
some members have had over four years of experience in establishing and
working with co-operative gameplay. Their first project, Sven Co-op
(initially released January, 1999), has received both critical and public
acclaim, and was chosen to be exhibited by the team at the 4th Annual
Half-Life Mod Expo in Dallas, Texas. Visit www.svencoop.com for further
information.

"We have created a linux client for the current Steam Beta. If you wish to run a beta server under linux then you can download the client from:
ftp://ftp.valvesoftware.com/Linux/steam

server: ftp.valvesoftware.com
user: hlserver
password: hlserver
directory: Linux/steam

This directory contains two files, "Steam_README.txt" which details how to use the tool and "steam.gz" which can be unzipped (via gzip -d "steam.gz") to extract the "steam" binary. You should copy this binary to an existing hlds_l directory (any version) and then use "steam" binary to update it to the Steam beta version (the Steam_README.txt file tells you how to do this).

Please note that this is a beta release and we would appreciate you reporting any bugs you may encounter. Please include details such as the exact linux kernel and linux distribution you are using (or the FreeBSD
equivalents). "

Changelog (vs 3.1.1.1)
------------------------
See: http://www.steampowered.com/platform/update_history/dedicated%20server.html
Plus:
- Optimised tracelines, this should significantly improve performance for mods using 9-way blending (i.e CStrike and DoD).
