ARKANE STUDIOS DEVELOPING ON SOURCE

Arx Fatalis Creator Licenses Valve's Source Engine

February 3, 2004 – Valve, developer of best selling games and leading edge technologies, today announced a Source Engine licensing partnership with Arkane Studios, creators of Arx Fatalis. Already in development, Arkane's Source-based project is targeted for the PC.

Valve's Source Engine Technology, the same used to create Half-Life 2, gives developers the ability to create expressive digital actors and physically simulated worlds. It also offers advanced rendering capabilities and the industry's most convincing artificial intelligence.

"It is a very comfortable feeling for a developer to be able to concentrate on the content of its game and have access to a set of stunning features and capabilities," said Raphael Colantonio, CEO of Arkane Studios. "Source is solid, performant and extremely complete in terms of the amount of innovative features. But more important, it is also open and flexible enough to allow us to build creatively upon, without having to bare the technological risks. Working with Valve is not only a fan's dream, but also an excellent opportunity to be one of the fortunate developers in the world to benefit from the Source engine's most impressive features."

Arkane Studios joins Troika Games as the second announced Source licensee. Source is designed for the creation of games and MODs from all genres, and contains a host of proprietary tools for level editing, character direction and more.

"The Half-Life technology was pushed well beyond our expectations by the MOD development community," said Gabe Newell, Valve's managing director. "This provided invaluable knowledge for producing a cutting edge, flexible, and easy to use set of tools and engine technology."

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – When Gabe Newell, founder of Valve Software, confirmed last October that hackers had wormed their way into the developer's network and stolen the source code to "Half-Life 2," it sent shock waves through the gaming industry. "Half-Life 2," you see, wasn't just a title any gamer worth his or her salt was drooling over, it was the title industry insiders were counting on to help revive the struggling PC gaming business.
As Valve developers gathered their wits, an executive from publisher Vivendi Universal Games told media outlets that the theft would delay the game until April 2004. That date was nothing more than a blind guess, though. Valve, the only company that really had a firm grasp on the impact of the theft, wrapped itself in a cocoon, refusing all questions from the media and not saying a word about when the game would hit shelves – until now.
While still shying away from giving a firm date, Doug Lombardi, Valve's director of marketing, told me the company "is currently targeting this summer for the completion of Half-Life 2".

It is has finally happened. Bots have been created for BG. Cheeseh has added support for Battle Grounds in version 1.3 of his RcBot.
The bots are at current at tad rough and have a few problems according to reports, but this is a first release for bg and there are bound to be niggles with the bots at first.

You can download RcBots at http://www.rcbots.net

Everyone has been busy with Christmas and school/college/etc in the past few weeks. That is also the reason for more than a month without a newspost. But that doesnt mean we were lazy, at least not all of us :).
Jadeo did an excellent job on the new French Player model that Roska modeled a while back. I did a short animation to show the model from all sides. It's a bink *.exe file 1.4mb and can be found here:

Another important event is the beginning of Battle for the Colonies Campaign 2. Sign up on their website and fight the most intensive battles ever.

Unlike what the lack of updates on our home page may let you suppose, the team behind INCorporated is always on the look out, and still at work. Also we feel it is high time to get back to you with some work in progress !

To start with, the first INCorporated video (divx) ever* is available, and introduces our first animation tests on a heavy Gov model. No need to say that many of us are impatient to start firing at each other with this baby!
Next are 2 screenshots. The first shows some of the environment texturing work involved in our teaser, and also in what will be our first beta 1 test map (with a lower polycount of course).
The second is a stylized render of an encounter between the forementionned heavy Gov and an Epsilon guy who some of you may recognize.

Two rifles are by ichi, the pistol is done by Mr_Hat. Quakeulf came back from his sabatical with 6 new gun designs, and a great portrayal of the delta-tech clinics where the powerful cyborg bodies are constructed. Check out this and more over at the media section.

Souce: edgenetwork
Greetings Hosted Sites,
It is with annoyance and shame to admit on the 30th January, someone successfully hacked our server and overwrote all index.* files with a signature message. This happened at the most critical of times while we were planning out a datacenter move/server upgrade, which has inconvenienced not only all of you, but us in a way I don't even want to bring up. It also has caught us without access to a system-wide backup - though fortunately nothing is lost, except all files resembling index.*. This sadly includes any forum templates which make use of files like index.htm. I admit I feel lucky this hacker didn't choose a more drastic action, as it could've literally been the end of edgenetwork entirely due to the crucial time he struck.
I have personally been overviewing the entire process of trying to bring everything online, including not having slept since it occurred. I do not wish to name & badmouth the datacenter we are currently hosted at, but they haven't exactly provided us with helpful support in the areas where we have no control (physical access to our servers). This is why we have been down for more than an entire day. As it stands, we have the network online, with all services resuming as per normal. Web is also online, but your sites still have 'corrupted' index files which you, I'm sorry, will need to replace. I will be placing a file "overwritten_files.txt" in all root website directories (ie. /domain/subdomain/overwritten_files.txt), which will list all index.* files under that path that you will need to attend to. With the above said, we are still waiting on techs at the datacenter to finish one last task that will require a reboot, assuming they do their job and we've done ours properly, the system will reboot and everything back in order. There is a fraction of a chance something will go wrong, as things do with technology.
As for how this hacker managed to succeed. In four years, we have never been hacked successfully. Hundreds of people have made use of the exploits in open source projects including but not limited to, PHPNuke, PHPBB, etc. Those who have exploited the script and tried to gain access have always failed, due to our security team keeping the system airtight. Literally hundreds had failed not from lack of trying, until yesterday. So with this, we have tried our best time and time again to keep the system secure, but unless we ban the use of open source scripts we'll continue to have people trying. I make this plead to all those using scripts such as PHPNuke to *keep them uptodate*. We have to continually keep the system uptodate, so please do your small part.
Lastly, as said above, we are planning a datacenter move. This move should be hardly noticeable, with only a few hours downtime. It will most likely be occurring within the next week.
