Once again the CPL is experiencing rapid registrations for one of its tournaments, this time for the $100,000 Counter-Strike (CS) World Championship.
Earlier today all 48 available spots were taken, and in an effort to accommodate more teams the CPL added 8 waiting list spots which were taken in a matter of minutes. With 60 teams still trying to complete their five-member registrations, the CPL has decided to expand the CS tournament to 96 teams. This will offer a few more teams an opportunity to complete their registrations on a first-come first-served basis.
Currently the 96-team CS tournament, has a block of 16 berths for worldwide qualifiers, 48 teams are confirmed and 8 more teams are being moved from the waiting list to the confirmed list. This means that only 24 more teams will be able to confirm their registration, and another 4 teams can register for new waiting list spots once the confirmed spots are all taken. The CPL recommends that teams vying for tournament spots act quickly.
The CS tournament rules have been updated to reflect this change.

This morning at about 8:30 PST, Steam was hit by a distributed denial of service attack. For about two and a half hours, Steam and its games were unavailable to users. We have since fixed the problem, and player numbers have returned to a normal state.

Steam's content servers are still busy with yesterday's update, but for the most part Steam users have been able to get up and running without problems.

The new email validation feature has been causing some users confusion. Our network problems have caused the validation emails to be delivered too slowly -- if you are waiting to receive your automated email response from Steam, please give it some time. We're sorry if this is causing inconvenience; the delivery speed will be improved soon.

Let us know if you're experiencing any other problems.

Today is the day of steam updates...
Since this morning's update was released, the Steam network has been overloaded, causing many Steam users to be unable to login.

Until the Steam content servers are able to catch up with demand, some users will continue to experience slowness or unresponsiveness from the Steam client. We've been making some changes to the content servers today to accelerate this recovery, and we expect conditions to improve quite a bit by tomorrow morning.

Thanks, again, for your patience after this update.

Pendragon, a staff member of Half-Life II Central and I sat down today to a long discussion about our humble mod. We discussed various things about -TSV-, from how we are implementing our gas, to the affect of Officers on the other classes, here's a snippet:

Pendragon: So, getting back to the game itself, can you tell me the basics of your campaign system? How will the battles progress?

Chief Phillips: When a server restarts its map cycle, your team is on the lines where historically, the Commonwealth, French, and Germans were. It is up to the British and French teams to defeat the German defenses, and win the battle, which is a given. When a battle is won in the Commonwealth/French's favor, the map rotation goes to the next historical battle of the Campaign.

What are the Germans supposed to be doing during all of this? Trying to stop the advances, and if possible, launch a counter-offensive against the enemy trenches. It's up to the Germans to hold on, and eventually push the invaders back to their lines, and away from the battle, in which case they will be triumphant. As the battle goes on as well, you can notice weather changes. From the hot and muggy summer, to the wet and muddy fall, and into the snowy frozen winter, when historically, the Commonwealth and French called off the campaign, and abandoned all hopes of success.

You can check out the rest of the article by clicking Here. We've also released 2 Exclusive shots to Half-Life 2 Central, the Maxim 08 and the Maxim 08/15, by Mitlancer!

    Source: Project Hull Breach
On midnight the 1st of March - Project Hull Breach - a scifi community mod project kicked it's opening off with a 300 dollar art competition. A bonus prize being awarded for the logo / banner category. The site went straight to the modDB number 1 spot with 3764 unique hits within 3 hours of opening. Even planethalflife (despite it's tendency not to cover hl2 related mods) gave some coverage.
So what makes PHB different from the rest, well the community is invited to join the project in any way they see fit, offering guidance in all areas of the development PHB aims to provide keen wannabes the means to learn new skills via tutorials and a helpful community as well as raising the public profile of yet un-noticed talent within the modding scene. Currently the project is focusing carefully on the design and concept - creating a dark believable futuristic world in space, drawing ships, interiors, fashion, technology etc. Many say that the modding community are twiddling thumbs whilst they await the SDk2.0 release, not PHB. As any software engineer will tell you, poor planning equals poor performance and whilst the small mods yawn and produce random 3d weapon models PHB are preparing ourselves by following the full development life cycle, and that starts in concept and design. Preparing for what will be a management nightmare, a sophisticated PHP based structure is being created to ensure full control is kept over all areas of the development. We welcome anyone to drop by and simply join in!
    Promotional Media

Example model concepts by J.Waterson reflect a possible futuristic ww2 feel to the game.

Some gorgeous concept weapons which will soon be converted to 3d

The Rebel Wrist Sword - George Lucas ain't sueing over this one :)
