Shawn has been talking to me and the rest of the admins about a new backend for all network sites and some more features. He posted on the fourms the other day what he is planning to do so i decided to share this information with you. If you have any questions check it out.
Since it's me doing a bulk of the work on this redesign (not to take the spotlight away from the actual staff on the site who work every day on the site!), I just thought I'd make a post on this thread. It will be quite long but hopefully will answer any questions.

The Design:
--------------
I'll be sticking with the edge skeleton still, some people don't like but the staff do and the recent poll suggests people like fixed-width designs, or at least the way the site currently is. So, for simplicity the skeleton design is the same.
GTAGaming is one site, it's not like those other sites who devote a domain per game. The staff and myself all agree that is a waste. But we also agree what we have is completely disorganized, my fault really as I'm the programmer/designer. They've done the best they can to make it easy, but in the end this is supposed to be my job.
With that said, when you load the San Andreas part of the site it will almost be as if it is it's own site. The theme will obviously be San Andreas, news page will show only San Andreas news, so on so forth. It will take time for ALL of this to be completely finished (ie. showing files ONLY about San Andreas, POTDs ONLY for San Andreas, etc), but the first "version" of it isn't TOO far away.

Files:
------
A HUGE issue I'm aware. EdgeFiles Sucks! EdgeFiles Sucks! Don't use EdgeFiles! I hear it all the time. If it's any consolation the GTAGaming staff don't like it either. EdgeFiles is not a luxury option, it's not something we're doing just to inconvenience you either. EdgeFiles is a necessary evil - bandwidth costs money. EdgeFiles' purpose is to alleviate costs by spreading the usage over several servers. GTAGaming itself - JUST WEB TRAFFIC - does around 10gb/day. Not including it's hosted sites who, btw, get bannerless hosting as long as they don't use TOO much.

With that said, although this also won't take effect straight away, our network sites starting with GTAGaming are going to have EdgeFiles built into it. However, we still have to place additional ads to cover costs on the file pages (rest of site will still use standard banner at top of page), but you will not have to be linked to edgefiles to download first.

Forums:
---------
This will take the longest to implement. Say goodbye to edgeforums, I know a lot of you also don't like this setup. Those of you who do, if anything you've just grown comfortable with this site instead of preferring it. The staff are severely limited for customization here, for reasons that are my fault also. I like vBulletin but it costs way too much to have one on every site, hence why edgeforums was created - one vBulletin for all network sites.
Well, that's going to change. The new idea is to setup a forum on each network site, using Invision Board or PHPBB (undecided). This will give the staff complete control over it, instead of "Junior Member" you might be a "Thug" to fit in with GTA theme. Not only that, but you'll be able to choose a GTA3/ViceCity/SanAn theme while using the forum.
All sites' forums will still tie to edgeid, you will not have to worry about that at all.

Grenade Wars, a Half-Life modifications, is looking for an assistant coder to help the main coder. Bluewolf72 also gave me the link to some of the nice renders they have on the site.

So if you can help out in any way go forth and contact them.

The FLF Defiance team is still working on the mod. Version 1.8 is still under development.
As so many of you continue to ask what is going on in FLF, let this post shine some light on the subject. Work is still being done on FLF, although it is being done at a much slower rate. Slower than anytime in FLF's history I would imagine. As it has been said many times before, all those involved seemed to have had an eruption of events in their real life. As for a release date, features update, and so on, I can give no official comment on that. There is no point asking all the time about what is going on. When actual news and/or updates occur, know that it will be posted. I and others on the Dev team have been very good about releasing pertinent information when it became available. But we are not going to release every detail because not every detail is important. So going forward, check back to see if any news has been posted and enjoy 1.8.

The CPL announced that it has finalized the new CAL web site. The new version of the CPL's online division, named CAL (for Cyberathlete Amateur League), has been completely revamped from the ground up. From a brand new administrative back-end, to the clean user interface, the new web site streamlines and optimizes the online experience of the tens of thousands of gamers that compete in CAL tournaments every week.

I have finished the model of the fist map backyard.
It still needs several mapobjects like a car and container. The players will respawn in the right place.

Well, it didn't take long, did it?

We decided to take a step back and look at what we were getting ourselves into. Already, the mod looked pretty complex. So, we decided to hit two birds with one stone. Last year, we tried to make a Battle Royale mod as the Zero Hour Interactive team. Some of you may remember that, and a lot of you don't. Well, we decided to transform that mod into this one. The problem with the last mod was that Half-Life 2 was delayed, so we felt kind of let down as a part of the mod community that was going to pour all of its energy into the game. Well, now, we are going for an anime-inspired Battle Royale spin-off game. We are going to implement our own characters with their own backgrounds, and we will be taking ideas from the story itself. Some of those include:

-Random weapons at the start of each round
-Bombs around characters next to alter gameplay
-Dark, brooding characters with seperate backgrounds
-Friendship System, where you have to choose your friends and enemies wisely.

We are currently finishing up the design document and hope to change both the web site and the mod information as soon as it is done. I'm real sorry for those who were looking for a single player sci-fi adventure, but most likely, once I become a more accomplished mod maker, I'll look into taking up that project once again. Hopefully, if I get into the gaming industry, I will try to push for this idea to be done. For now, enjoy a brand new multiplayer game that has few similarities to other mods!

Source: Forsaken
I just got an e-mail informing me of a new Half-Life 2 mod, 'Forsaken'. The information bellow explains it all. Also be sure to check out their website for it has some concept art.
To sum up the mod, it will basically contain multi-player urban warfare, after a virus almost wipes out mankind in 2006... 3 years later, 3 surviving 'factions' battle for control of resources, territory and survival in the 'empty' cities we once called home.

The mod will rely heavily on team play and realism, and it's main attractions will be the rich storyline we have created with 3 very different, well-balanced 'factions' or teams, along with level designs that are based on real places (i.e. London Tube station, New York shopping malls etc...), and many other unique game play ideas.

We have recently started development and have just launched our public site. We have a fair amount of concept art and a few models already in the works. Please feel free to check out our site at:

Today we have a really great update to show you. The reason I give it the title lucky 7 is this update was destined for yesterday, and I probably tried to post it 6 times before (the site is funky right now). Anyways first I would like to bring you pics of the UTF and NGM Carbine Concepts, made by the art-guru that is Dete.

UTF Carbine Concept

NGM Carbine Concept

Second of all, and this is the big surprise, Nazeil has finished the UTF Marine Model, Skin and normal map. All this was kept under wraps until now. The source model for this comes in at 600,000 triangles with the result only being a few thousand. This is some truly impressive work and makes Eternal Silence one of the first mods to use fully normal mapped model.

That brings this update to an end. I hope it has been worth the wait. Hats off to Nazeil for his great work, and taking our 11 page topic of crits in stride to complete this awesome piece of art.
