A new Half-Life 2 mod has been announced. The mod is called HEAT and here their first update:

Today the website of the HEAT Half Life 2 modification, www.heatmod.com, has been launched.
HEAT is a team-play oriented tactical shooter set in a modern and urban environment. We try to give the game a good mix between realism and gameplay, although HEAT is going to contain more realism than most modifications, which call themselves realistic.
One of our main features is that we will use Iron Sights instead of crosshairs accompanied by a realistic aiming system.
The movement system gives the player many opportunities to use the surroundings to his advantage, e.g. lean around corners, open doors slowly or climbing on boxes, roofs and over fences, but he will also be limited by a stamina system and limited space for weapons.

For a more detailed description feel free to surf on our website!
You will not only find more information and a forum for further questions here, but also 4 wallpapers for your desktop and our first concept arts.

Even though work on HEAT has already started, we are still looking for motivated modders! We are still searching for coders, modelers, texture artists, mappers and animators.
We are in contact with a motion capturing studio where we are allowed to do some motion capturing for HEAT for free! Therefor we are searching for a player-animator who has either experience in working with motion capturing or has already got great skills in animation.
More information about joining our work can be found on our website.

PS: Does anyone know if there is another modification that has used motion capturing? We have found no one so far and we would be happy if we could be 100% sure that HEAT is the first modification to do so!

Check the HEAT site for more on the realistic mod.

Two great looking pistol renders have been released by the team of The Trenches: Half-Life:

OK, it's time for a new Media Update. First of all big thanks to Polygon, who contributed the Skin for the Webley. We further finished the Mauser C96 Model & Skin, but enough talking, here are the pics.

Mauser C96: Model by Terminus, UVMap by MacH and Skin by rotzbua.
Webley Mk VI: Model and UVMap by Christian Øelund, Skin by Polygon.

Enjoy.

Both Alfred Hermida and James Bregman from the BBC News picked Half-Life 2 as The Game OF The Year. Here some words from James Bregman:

Honourable mentions must go to the magnificently understated Psi Ops and blockbusting, goods-delivering sequels Pro Evolution Soccer 4, Spider-man 2 and GTA: San Andreas. But Half-Life 2 is simply in a class of its own in terms of scope, ability to engage and staggeringly imaginative design.

Everyone hates change. People can become almost violent in their views on why CAL/CPLs decision to move on to Source is wrong. I know exactly how they feel. I was one of the most vocal supporters of CPL sticking with CS 1.3. Looking back on that important time for pro gaming it reminds me a lot of where we are now. CPL was faced with a choice. Either stick with 1.3 or move on to the much-hated 1.4. The “Pro gamers” and fans alike could not stand the changes in the game. It was a much-debated topic on CPL forums and on IRC. Players felt that game wasn’t the same anymore.

When players say Source doesn’t feel like CS, I simply reply that CS doesn’t feel like CS. The game has changed so much over the years that it is not the same. You either adapt or stay behind. You can still find QuakeWorld players playing today. The leagues will move on without you.

Related: Insurgency

The Insurgency team has released some great looking new media:

We promised an update before the end of the month and here it is! It isn't major, but at least it's something new to see!

The T-72 is modelled and textured by Tolchok and the version in the render is for the Balkan region. There is also an Iraqi version as well as a wrecked version (as seen before). The Humvee was modelled by Spydr, Ankalar, and Dennis. It was textured by Polygon and shown here is the Desert scheme. There will also be a Woodland version for those maps not set in the desert.

Also, if you have not already seen, we have a work-in-progress screenshot of our United States Marine (Desert MARPAT) in our Dev. Showcase Forum. You must be a registered Forum Member in order to view the contents of this forum.

We seem to receive many e-mails regarding two things that are always the same. That is when our release date is and if someone can beta test. We are currently shooting for a Q2 2005 public release of the first version of the mod. It won't contain everything advertised, but will be the majority in order to maintain solid gameplay and visual quality. Secondly, we are not looking for anyone to beta test the mod at this point. There will be announcements closer to the time of when we will be accepting applicants and selecting testers. Just be patient!

Come the new year, you will see much more from us. Our internal build (alpha) is coming along really well and Pongles has even programmed a nice external Map Configuration program in order to easily generate configuration files for our maps. Just be patient for the next update... we are working very hard every day on new content and saving stuff for a bigger update!

Head on over to the Insurgency site for more.

Related: Babylon City

Brand new media has been put online by the Babylon City team:

Work is going slow at the moment, but first some good news. B0Bski joined our team, and his position will be in the sound department. His job is to create the theme song, and various sound effects.

DrecK is working on many more character concepts, but we still need people who can model them. Here are three new images.
I have been working on the city structure, the documentation and weapon models since we have no modeler in the team.
Like I said, the work is going slow, but here is an image of the Mac10 (wip).

Wile trying to promote some of the great custom maps made by the community I stumbled over this piece of beauty found at HL2Files.com. Half-Life 2 Freeway To C17 is a great looking map for the Half-Life 2 Deathmatch made by Tom Rudderham:

This map is for Half-Life 2 Deathmatch. On the outskirts of City 17 a battle rages on an abandoned freeway. Use the burning cars and trash as cover, and the subways for shelter and safety as the battle rages above! Map includes a hidden hideaway, tank, trees to hide in and a ton of detail.

You can download the map here.

Related: Garry's Mod
Garry's mod is a half-life 2 mod with the following features:
  • Ragdoll Poser

  • Rope objects and people together

  • Weld objects and people together

  • Place a camera and watch it on your HUD

  • Shoot 100's of props out of your RPG

  • Attach manhacks and scanners to objects and corpses

Version 3 gives the ability to attach wheels to things. You can then control the speed of the wheels via the mouse wheel or the plus and minus keys on your keyboard.
Here's the changelog
  • Shotgun can now be used to add motorized wheels

    • Different wheel classes

    • Each class can be destroyed and have their speed changed independently

    • Rotation speeds can be adjusted with the mouse wheel

    • Right click to change the wheel class

    • Press use to adjust the direction the wheel rotates

    • Reload removes wheel connections, if pressed again it removes the wheel

  • Added construct map (rushed, I wanted to get it out, but better than nothing)

  • You can now get the hevsuit even if you already have one (prevents showstopping bug in HL2)

  • Fixed rope hang distance fault

  • Fixed length constraint (rope) being too long

  • Crossbow reload now deletes all created constraints

  • Ragdolls now save their fixed constraint properly (weld)

  • You can now pick up most enemy corpses

  • Prevented player from picking up Jeep with the gravity gun (caused crash)

  • Added on screen info for some entities rather than spamming them in the console

  • Physcannon grab now wakes up paused objects (this might cause weird problems in the SP game)

Related: Evolution

The Evolution team has released some more weapon concept art pieces:

It's Christmas time on the Evolution homepage all over again. We have some new weapon concepts from Voodoo. Have a peek and let us know what you think.

We're hoping to get these concepts into an actual set of models, but as of right now, we don't have a full-time 3d modeler. If you want to help out with that, let us know. And, as always, you can check out the rest of the media on our homepage in the Media section. Also, any questions can be asked in our FAQ, our forums, or can be lordneptune@teamexp.net emailed to me.
