I would like to aanounce that the Global Devastation Mod for Half Life 2 is now set to "GO", This means we have a website (currently having the DNS sorted out) at http://www.globaldevastation.com and will feature a PHP Nuke main homepage, PHPBB forums and a first for any mod the Moodle Educational System (this means the modding team can swap files over, meet certain objectives for the version and disscuss changes/rate own work using the built in forums). Guests can visit the Moodle section to check up on the status but they cannot download any files until the team releases it on the main PHP Nuke site.

The Mod itself is an intense team strategy based FPS set during an apocalypse, The year is 2107 and the American Foreign Space object defense program (also known as AFSOD) detected a massive band of asteroids heading for earth from the Ort cloud but partway through the firing sequence the system malfunctioned and instead of several massive asteroids heading for earth there are now millions of tiny bits. The goverments evacuated into their emergency bunkers leaving the civilians and some millitary on the surface to seek cover, with no goverment around to control the countries the whole world breaks out into war with anyone who opposes, Some people form giant factions to terrorise the millitary forces while some are just defending the nearest food or water supplies. Then the asteroids start raining down and destroying buildings but they are not big enough to wipe out massive areas so people continuse to fight over supplies and areas.

This mod involves strategy because 2 of the game modes are based on teamwork and you have to know what you team is doing, there is a leader which is selected at the beggining of each round determined by score, performence or maybe a random choice, the server will state at the beggining of the match, the leader can send commands to people and co-ordinate his/her team into certain attack patterns. Maybe a possibility to plot waypoints, of course the commander can go out and get his/her hands dirty but when they die a new commander is selected etc etc, The first is plain old team deathmatch, the second is unamed, if you have played Science and Industry then you will be familiar with this, On the map there are certain supplies that you have to find, collect and take back to your base before the enemy does, if the round hasn't finished and there are no supplies left then you can steal from the enemy base or find raw materials to make more. This mod will also feature team Vehicles which means more than one person in one vehicle, maybe even people carriers and a possibility of aircraft!

At present there are about 4 people in the mod team, we need much more than that, about 15 will do just fine so if you would like to join the team then e-mail me on the address at the bottom of this article.

We need (preferably experienced people)
  • Mappers (about 4-6 people)

  • 3D Modellers (split into categorys) (about 3-5 people)

    • Props

    • Characters

    • Weapons

    • Vehicles

  • Sound Effects/Music (about 1-3 people)

  • Coders (About 4-6 experienced guys! we need to be able to do loads of professional stuff)

If you have any questions, suggestions or want to join the team then contact me at Xploder@gmail.com

Thanks
Xploder (Global Devastation Mod Team Manager)

Source: DEAD
D.E.A.D is a newly announced Half-Life 2 modification which will see a team of the 'dead' take on a team of the living with both teams having to complete specific goals laid down in order to enhance player skills.

"The undead have started to take over, the year is 2025, and what is left of the human race that are still alive have to fight in order to stay alive. The undead have one goal and that is to rid the world of everything that is still living, and the living have one goal and that is to survive. If they fail - all is lost!"

This concept sounds in some way reminicent of the Warcraft 3 plug-in for Counter-Strike and with some hard work could certainly prove effective running on the Source engine.

I am saddened to share this with you all. While out on holidays in British Columbia, Lurchus_Orilios (Brad Johnston), our concept artist, teammate, and friend, passed away. This news comes as a big shock to the whole team. Brad was an extremely important member of our group. Not only were his artistic skills top-notch, but his attitude, passion, and drive for this project were an inspiration to us all. We will never be able to fill the void left by his absence.

On behalf of the whole team, we would like to send out our love and prayers to his family and friends. Additionally, we would like to ask each and every one of you to take a moment and say a prayer for him and his family.

Brad is surely in a better place. Rest in peace our friend, and keep a light out for us.

Source: Gotfrag
With all the uproar over CPL going to Source for next summer, SPAMBOO wrote a very well-written article laying out the case for the need to have a pro mode. He essentially described his pro mode as Source: 1.6.

I say that this is the last thing the community needs. I was around through one of the biggest changes to CS ever: the jumping change, where they added the stutter-step after a jump. Even today, years after it was done, I still disagree with the change, but I'm still playing CS and reading about it on GotFrag, aren't I?

The reason I bring this up is because every single time there is a change, the community complains about it, sometimes in an eloquent way, and sometimes in a “kthxbye” way. But after every update, the game grows. Now, popularity isn't always a good thing, especially in a game with a certain level of randomness in it. You can easily compare CS to poker: online, it's much more random, with terrible people beating good people simply based on luck, whereas

Just letting you know about a new site update of the new half-life II mod The Devils Reef… After a lot of thought and 100’s of requests I have decided to make The Devils Reef the sequel to The Gate which was my Half-life1 mod... So effectively the Story will continue from where The Gate Ended! But of course will be created on the Brilliant Half-Life II Engine!

The First Screenshots of the THE DEVILS REEF are released..

The Reef site is now 100% finished up and running..

Source: Snow War
Tomorrow Teemu has to start his service at the Finnish army and I’d like to say thank you in the name of the rest of the team for a great time while working on Snow-War. It’s been really much fun but - as Teemu wrote in his previous news post - not always easy. For example I checked my mIRC logs today and saw that we originally intended to release Snow-War 2.0 before Christmas 2002. Fortunately there were only few times when not all team members were of the same opinion about something, maybe about two or three times. In fact my SW2 trailer was the hardest thing during all the years. I made three different videos and several versions of the trailer which was then finally released. On the other hand we have many people posting in our forums, at least after the release of Snow-War 2.0 more players than many other mods, our IRC channel gets crowded these days and Snow-War has been on TV two times where I live.
So all that’s left for me to say is Good Luck while serving your country, soldier. I’m sure you’ll get the one or the other chance to say hallo during the next six months.
